“It’s so rewarding to ease a client’s burden and assist them during a trying time.”
Attorney Ali Overby (Partner)
Susan “Ali” Overby joined the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin in 2015, was selected as a firm Partner in 2024, and is an integral member of the workers’ compensation team. Ali is a dedicated and caring advocate for injured workers and a North Carolina State Bar Board Certified Specialist in workers’ compensation law – something less than 1% of workers’ comp attorneys licensed to practice in the state can say.*
Ali spent her childhood in Richmond, Virgina, the older of two daughters in a tight-knit, supportive family. She was the peacekeeper and planner in the family, and early in life she learned the value of thoughtful negotiation and efficient organization – skills she now employs to prioritize her clients’ needs. Her father was an ideal role model who played an active role in his daughters’ lives, and Ali strives daily to emulate his work ethic, honesty, and empathy in her personal and professional life.
Ali attended the University of Virginia where she earned a Bachelor of Arts as a double major in English and Psychology and a Dean’s List scholar. Upon graduation, she embarked on the path that would eventually lead her to our firm. She moved to Raleigh, North Carolina to complete a paralegal certificate program at Meredith College and then accepted a position at a local firm.
An Introduction to Workers’ Compensation
Two years later, Ali was introduced to the practice of workers’ comp law when she accepted a part-time paralegal position at a small two-attorney firm while attending Campbell University School of Law. She respected the lawyers at the firm and witnessed firsthand how their efforts helped injured workers. Ali continued working with the firm throughout law school and accepted a full-time position there after earning her J.D. – and her interest in workers’ comp law was solidified.
When that law firm began winding down its practice, Ali knew it was time to move to a larger firm dedicated to helping people navigate the workers’ comp maze, and she joined the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin.
Ali enjoys helping clients overcome obstacles and pursue their goals, whether that involves dealing with problematic employers, negotiating with stubborn claims adjusters, or resolving a client’s claims for an amount that will allow them to move on.1 And she is proud to be part of a team that has been able to help many people:
Ali’s hard work and commitment has been recognized by her peers. She has been named to the ‘Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch’ list4 for Workers’ Compensation Law – Claimants by Best Lawyers in America from 2021-2025.
Off the Clock With Family
Ali lives with her husband, daughter, and rescue dog in Raleigh. She loves reading and traveling and spends much of her “downtime” being an active and involved parent -whether that means bike riding, rollerblading, or playing with Barbies.
