Eviction Crisis in Durham: A Need That Needs to Be Met
May 31st, 2018: There are over 900 eviction filings every month in Durham – many due to little more than landlords selling their buildings to make way for the unprecedented gentrification in the Durham area. Landlords have lawyers, but most tenants do not. That’s not fair. When the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin learned of this crisis and was offered an opportunity to help fund a program that could potentially help tenants seek justice and try to keep their homes, the firm stepped in. We provided seed money to fund the newly launched Durham Eviction Diversion Program through the Duke Law School Civil Justice Clinic and Legal Aid of North Carolina. So far, the program, which provides free legal assistance to low-income residents facing eviction, has helped 80% of those represented. Read this fascinating Herald Sun piece about how this new program is helping tenants fight back.
