“I receive tremendous satisfaction knowing that what I do helps protect people against forces that work against their best interests and that I can help people move through disrupting, and sometimes tragic, events which occur in their lives.”
Attorney Tara J. Williams (Partner)
Tara Williams joined the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin in 2002. She became a Partner in 2005, a member of the Executive Leadership Team in 2023, and has served in many significant roles throughout the firm. She is a conscientious and impactful leader and a tireless advocate for our clients.
An Unusual Path to Law
Tara’s childhood was far from ordinary, as was her path to becoming a lawyer. At the age of five, she moved with her family to Kampala, Uganda, where her parents participated in a training program for African teachers. When her family returned to the States, they eventually settled in Alabama.
Tara attended Stephen’s College in Columbia, Missouri, where she focused on religion and philosophy. After a summer internship sparked her interest in art conservation and historic preservation, she transferred to Auburn University and switched majors. Ultimately, Tara chose to pursue a career in intellectual property law after obtaining her J.D. from University of North Carolina School of Law.
A Diverse and Meaningful Career
In 2002, after years of handling patents, trademarks, and copyrights, Tara decided that she wanted to practice in an area of law where she could more directly and positively impact people’s lives and help them successfully navigate the legal process. This led her to the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin and the practice of personal injury (PI) law. As a new attorney at the firm, Tara worked diligently to learn the ins-and-outs of PI and soon was fighting injustice with one of the largest caseloads in the firm.
Throughout her career, Tara has undertaken the roles of attorney, department head, Partner, and Executive Leadership Team member, led many initiatives, and developed many teams within the firm that have contributed to its growth.
Tara further demonstrated her adaptability, in addition to her commitment, drive, and leadership skills, when she took on customer onboarding responsibilities and served as interim CEO of the firm’s case management software company, GrowPath. In 2023, Tara pivoted again and created the firm’s Training Department so that all departments can be prepared and proficient when working with clients.
An Involved and Recognized Attorney
Tara is a member of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice, as well as the North Carolina Bar Association and the 16th Judicial District Bar Association. She is admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern, Middle, and Western Districts of North Carolina, as well as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
A Full Life Outside of Work
In her downtime, Tara strives to be a good steward of her surroundings. She gardens and does yardwork to nurture the environment around her and travels often, from the beaches to the mountains of North Carolina.
Music is an integral part of Tara’s life, whether she’s playing or attending live concerts. She also has a crafty side, which includes painting watercolors and knitting.
